Santa Monica Police Looking for Check Counterfeiter |
|||||||||||
By Lookout Staff September 14, 2012 -- Santa Monica Police are looking for a black woman, in her mid 20s to early 30s, who has been cashing counterfeit checks around town.
The woman, who has stolen approximately $30,000 between February and May, is described as having a thin build, long straight dark hair and dark eyes. “She goes in with a counterfeit check, with the name of a victim,” said Sgt. Richard Lewis , the police department spokesman. According to Lewis, the suspect has been targeting mostly Bank of America locations. There are many ways that the suspect -- and any accomplices she may have -- could have stolen the information from the victims, Lewis said. “Either they know the people” they are stealing from, said Lewis, or “they have someone on the inside.” The suspects could also find the victims' information in the trash or by stealing people's mail. Speaking in general, Lewis said that once identity thieves get that information, they can print it on counterfeit checks and try to cash them. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Robert D'Andrea at 310.458.2201 ext. 6679, Sergeant Henry Ramirez at 310.458-8453 or the Santa Monica Police Department at 310.458.8495. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call WE Tip at 1-800-78-CRIME (1-800-78-27643), or submit the tip online at http://www.wetip.com/ Anonymous tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers by either calling (800) 222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting their website at http://www.lacrimestoppers.org/ |
