Zanny Rumors?

Let's put an end to the rumors. Or maybe we're just adding to them.

Denny Zane, former mayor and one of the co-chairs of SMRR, says he is not in the running for the city manager's job.

Almost the minute City Manager John Jalili announced he is retiring in November, rumors started flying about who would be next.

The idea that Zane would end up as Santa Monica's CEO, on its face, is ridiculous. SMRR already controls the city council. With Zane in City Hall, Santa Monica would become more of a one-party town than it already is. Who would stand for that?

But it's not impossible, either. If SMRR ends up with a fifth seat on the city council after next month's election, that's enough
votes for SMRR council members to hire almost anyone they want. "I'm flattered, but I'm not interested," said Zane, who added
that he has received several calls asking him if the rumors are true.

The city council is scheduled to meet Tuesday to talk about the city manager's position. Since the meeting is closed to the
public, we may never know if Zane's name came up.

Sooooo....if it's not Zane, what about Assistant City Manager Susan McCarthy?
