That’s Konono No. 1, a band founded over 25 years ago by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likemb?, a crude “thumb piano” central to Bazombo trance music from their region near the border of Congo and Angola. The band’s line-up includes three electric likemb?s (bass, medium and treble), which are amplified through hand-made microphones that Konono builds from magnets salvaged from old car parts. There’s also a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion, your everyday junkyard pots, pans, garbage cans and car parts. Mix in three singers, dancers and a sound system featuring some old-fashioned megaphones and you’ve got Konono No. 1, a most singular sound and musical experience. With a set of releases for
Crammed Discs, their brand new “Assume Crash Position” carries
on the strange and spectacular electro-traditional mixtures that make
up Konono’s “Congotronics” blend! One would say “Buzz’n’Rumble
from Urb’n’Jungle!” July 15 Talent
to be Announced Jovanotti (aka Lorenzo Cherubini) fills stadiums in his native Italy and throughout Latin America. He sets out this summer to bring his synthesis of rap, rock, hip-hop and rock to festivals across America. Jovanotti’s music has transformed from its early roots in rap and hip-hop to a broader hybrid, incorporating pointed lyrics addressing philosophical, religious, social, and political issues, more typical of a singer-songwriter, Italian cantautore tradition. He has recorded eleven studio
albums, the four most recent releases reaching #1 in Italy. Over the
past twenty years Jovanotti has collaborated with Brazil’s Daniela
Mercury, Sergio Mendes and Carlinhos Brown, and recorded alongside Ben
Harper, Michael Franti (Spearhead) and Bono (U2). Jovanotti appears
on several international compilations, most notably Red Hot + Rhapsody,
a 1998 tribute to George Gershwin, on which he performed “I Got
Rhythm” and His song “Piove” is featured on the CD
Peppers & Eggs from the soundtrack of the TV series The Sopranos. Jace Everett Indiana-born, Texas-raised, singer/songwriter Jace Everett became enamored by both gospel music and the works of Willie Nelson in his teenage years. Jace’s upbringing in the evangelical church and his far-flung travels are apparent in his songs: “The church is where I learned about music, played bass and did my first real public singing…where the girls thought I was really cool. I’ve always been attracted to emotionally and spiritually mature themes – philosophically and musically…” Jace’s song ‘Bad
Things’ is the “theme song, heard over the opening montage,
of True Blood, HBO’s most successful series since The Sopranos.
As the third season begins, Jace releases his own new album “Red
Revelations” and hits the road playing these songs. Everett’s
music evokes the complex, vividly emotional terrain of his diverse influences
and springs from the same sources of inspiration, contradiction and
risk; Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Jim Morrison, Elvis
Presley, Johnny Cash and Marvin Gaye. Ana Tijoux Chilean hip-hop artist Ana Tijoux was born in France to a French mother and a Chilean father while they were living in exile during the Pinochet dictatorship. After the return to democracy, the family moved back to Chile. While studying literature in school, Anita began immersing herself in Santiago’s hip-hop underground. Rhyming first in French, then later in Spanish, Tijoux found “…a platform to talk about all kinds of things” in a way that was cathartic. Tijoux is one of those rare rappers who actually carry a tune as gracefully as she can craft a lyric. Her singing abilities have caused her to be recruited to perform on tracks with the Argentine electronic-tango-alternative group Bajofondo, and to pair up with Mexican rocker Julieta Venegas on her hit song “Eres Para Mi.” She has developed a growing
following her jazz-inflected, ‘90s trip-hop, unusually melodic
rapping and witty, politically savvy lyrics. Her U.S. debut, 1977, is
named after the year of her birth and has just been released by National
Records. Anita describes her chosen art form thus: “Hip-hop was
born as an art of daring, celebrating, struggling.” July 29
While Kailash studied Classical Indian music in his early years, it was the traditional folk songs sung by his father that exerted the most influence on the young artist. In 2001, after a foray into the business world, Kailash left New Delhi for Mumbai, home to the highly competitive Bollywood film and music industry. Kailash’s first recording was an advertising jingle for a diamond company, made for the equivalent of $100. After recording a handful of jingles, the raw, earthy and soulful strength of his voice caught the attention of every production house and film composer in Mumbai. By 2004, Kailash had been catapulted to the stardom, performing on some of the biggest hits in Bollywood. Kailash has been heard in over sixty soundtracks and near two hundred jingles. After being introduced to
brothers Naresh and Paresh Kamath, fixtures of the Indian rock and jazz
scene, they formed Kailash Kher’s Kailasa, combining Kailash’s
strong traditional folk sensibilities and lyrics that invoke Sufi-mystical
dimensions with Naresh and Paresh’s more modern rock, electronic
and funk influences. Kailasa can be heard to best advantage on their
first American release, for the elite Cumbancha Records imprint. The
album, “Yatra (Nomadic Souls)” features re-recorded and
remixed classics alongside never released new material. August 5 Rickie Lee Jones is one of the most singular artists in today’s music world. A clue to defining her iconoclasm comes from her own family description as "lower-middle-class-hillbilly-hipster." From her emergence on the national scene in 1979, Rickie Lee has become one of the most acclaimed and talented singer-songwriters of our time spanning many genres: folk, rock, jazz, soul, spoken word and pop. Her first self-titled album launched her career and received five Grammy nominations. Her nominations included Best Song, for "Last Chance Texaco," Best Album, Best Pop Vocal and Best Rock Vocal. As it happened, she won Best New Artist, and her career was launched. Just four months after her debut, Rickie Lee graced the cover of Rolling Stone, and again only 18 months later. Her most recent releases are THE SERMON ON EXPOSITION BOULEVARD (2007), on which Rickie Lee and her collaborators have put Christ's words into a modern-day context, portraying those words in a way that anyone can understand and Balm in Gilead (2009). We’re honored to welcome,
as she brings a full band with horn section, the Duchess of Coolsville! August 12 Not many bands can say they’ve recorded with such diverse artists as Chaka Khan, Dave Matthews, Talib Kweli and John Scofield. Nor can many, if any, bands lay claim to opening for The Rolling Stones on one tour and having Stevie Wonder sit in with them on the next. The enduring musical relationships the band has developed, from the aforementioned artists to Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Joshua Redman, Robert Randolph, Kenny Garrett, The Roots, Fred Wesley, Ivan Neville and so many others, speak volumes about both how versatile and popular these talented musicians are. Brothers Neal Evans, Hammond
B3 organ, and Alan, drums, along with guitarist Eric Krasno have built
a body of work known for its grooves and catchy, upbeat tunes while
incorporating their brand of jazz, hip-hop, rock, soul, funk, R &
B, Blues. Soulive signed with legendary jazz label Blue Note Records
in 2000. Six years later, Soulive would be the first band signed to
the new Stax Records, home to the soul tradition built by Otis Redding,
Carla Thomas, Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers and Sam and Dave. Ever
forward looking, Soulive has launched Royal Family Records, giving them
full artistic control over their own recordings and making it possible
for Soulive to discover and develop emerging artists and talent. Dig
this: they have just released a brand new studio recording of Beatles
covers, entitled “Rubber Soulive!” http://www.royalfamilyrecords.com/soulive Break: As in “breakbeat.” That ten second slice of percussive magic in the middle of a funk song that, when looped together by progressive South Bronx DJs in the 1970s, became the basis of the hip-hop movement. Arkestra: Out-there jazzer Sun Ra’s funkafied concept of the stuffy classical orchestra. Flip the script and you wind up with a unique definition of the Los Angeles based ensemble known as The Breakestra. Formed by Dr. Miles Tackett, “Musicman,” in 1996, they began as the house band for the legendary club called the Breaks. The band is rooted in deep funk, soul, jazz fever and musical friendships. A Breakestra show is about dancing and swinging, musicians on stage getting loose and playing serious grooves. Breakestra has a way of invigorating breakbeats, paving the way for the funkily na?ve to embrace the rhythmic revolution that James Brown kicked off more than thirty years ago! We ask you: “What
are the first three letters of FUNK?” August 19 As one of the most admired and respected guitarists in Blues, R&B and Rock music, Mick Taylor’s distinctive, elegant slide guitar work graces some of the key albums in Rock & Roll history. Mick Taylor’s biggest impact and recognition came when he joined the ranks of illustrious alumni of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, accepting the Rolling Stones' offer to replace founding member Brian Jones in 1969. The Stones had already established their reputation as “the greatest rock/n/roll band” in the world, having just released the classic “Beggar's Banquet.” Taylor quickly added his imprint to the Stones and was present for the legendary concert tours through 1974. This is a significant time
for “Exile on Main Street.” The definitive, deluxe boxed-set
reissue has just been released and catapulted immediately to #1 on the
sales charts! With a DVD on the making of the album, articles and interviews
everywhere around the world, this is a most timely visit from Mick Taylor,
a mainstay of one the acknowledged ten top albums of all time, if not,
as most people simply say, “the greatest rock album ever”
and the Stones masterpiece and magnum opus! It has been over a decade
since Mick Taylor last played in Southern California. Tom Nolan Band – Blues, R&B and Soul One word sums up the Tom Nolan Band’s mission: “Dance!” Long-time local favorites, TNB boasts a world class rhythm section, great singers and soloists, and an intense stage show. TNB brings people to their feet playing a mix of originals and classic dance tunes which blend Soul, Blues, R&B and rock ‘n roll. In 2008, the band released
its seventh CD, “Live at Rusty’s” to much acclaim.
You may have seen them at a community concert, blues or jazz festivals
around the state, or playing at Rusty’s Surf Ranch right here
on the Santa Monica Pier, where they have been in residence for fifteen
years. The Tom Nolan Band lends their talents, support and efforts to
Habitat for Humanity, Katrina Relief, the Concern Foundation, the MS
Foundation, the Red Cross, Heal the Bay, and many Los Angeles schools.
TNB continues to bring joy and fun to the California music scene. In
a word, “Dance!” August 26 Beatlesfest, a three day tribute that began five years ago, is proud to be a part of the Twilight Dance Series this summer! September 2 An icon of American music born in New Orleans, Dr. John is indelibly linked to the traditions and singularity of the city’s musical and cultural heritage. Mac Rebennack burst onto the rock & roll scene in the late 60s as Dr. John, the Night Tripper, merging the Rhythm and Blues, voodoo rhythms and chants of his native New Orleans to create a persona perfect for the psychedelic era. Over the years he’s thrown in Jazz, Classic American Songbook, Zydeco, Boogie Woogie and Rock into the mix. In 1972 he recorded “Dr. John’s Gumbo,” an album covering several New Orleans standards with only one original. “Gumbo” is considered a cornerstone in New Orleans music. "In 1972, I recorded Gumbo, an album that was both a tribute to and my interpretation of the music I had grown up with in New Orleans in the 1940s and 1950s. I tried to keep a lot of the little changes that were characteristic of New Orleans, while working my own funknology on piano and guitar." The next year, with local legend Allen Toussaint producing and The Meters backing, Dr. John released the seminal New Orleans funk album “In the Right Place.” In the same way that “Gumbo” began his career-long reputation as an esteemed interpreter of New Orleans standards, “In the Right Place” established Dr. John as New Orleans’ preeminent ambassador. On this closing night of
our 26th season, we promise you that you are in “The Right Place”
for “Such a Night!” Eddie Baytos & the Nervis Brothers – World Mardi Gras Music Originally from New Orleans,
