Boys & Girls Clubs Build Homeless
Awareness in Santa Monica

August 26, 2010 -- On any given evening, there are approximately 50 homeless families with children in Santa Monica. To raise awareness around youth homelessness the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica and KooDooZ will host a “Night without a Home” Friday from 6 to 10 p.m..

Members of the community are invited to join Club Kids and their families for an evening learning about every-day actions they can take to help those in need.

Special guest speaker Jonas Corona, who is 7-years old, will share how he and his organization, “Love in The Mirror,” has assembled 1,500 backpacks filled with supplies for homeless kids.

Participants will assemble care packages with handmade cards and blankets to be donated to the Los Angeles Youth Network (LAYN), which serves local homeless children. Ehecatl Rojas of LAYN will also share some of the characteristics of children in distress and make suggestions for supporting these vulnerable youth as part of the discussion.

According to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty 1.35 million children are likely to experience homelessness in a given year (2007).

The Boys & Girls Clubs, officials said, “think it is important for our members, families and the community at large to understand more about this vulnerable population and what we can do collectively to make a difference.”

The event will take place at the Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club, 1238 Lincoln Boulevard.
Metered street parking is free after 6 p.m.
