Appian Way Closes for Pier Bridge Demolition

By Lookout Staff

October 2, 2026 – Appian Way, the roadway that provides access to the south side of the Pier parking lot, will be closed next Monday through Friday as the City reconstructs a new Pier Bridge, City officials announced Thursday.

Visitors can continue to access the Pier – which will remain open throughout the closure expected to be complete by the end of next year -- using alternate routes and parking facilities.

During next week's closure, vehicle access to Pier parking will be routed through the Pacific Coast Highway, "which may result in longer travel times," officials said. Visitors are encouraged to park at Beach Lot 4 South, Beach Lot 3 North and Parking Structure 8 at the Santa Monica Place mall.

"Clearly marked parking, pedestrian routes and wayfinding signage will guide visitors to the Pier," officials said. "Pedestrian access to the Pier and Ocean Front Walk will remain available throughout construction" of the Pier Bridge.

Public transit and rideshare services to the Pier are available during the closure, and several local bus routes and the Metro E Line provide convenient access to downtown Santa Monica a short walk away.

The $35.6 million replacement of the nearly 87-year-old bridge is expected to be completed in December 2027. The new structure, which meets modern seismic and safety standards, will be wider than the existing bridge and will maintain one traffic lane in each direction, while expanding walkways and adding new lighting and railing.

The project is expected to be completed "well ahead" of the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games and have a service life of 75 years, officials said.
