February 28, 2024 -- The School Board on Tuesday appointed Dr. Stacy Williamson as the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District's new assistant superintendent of educational services.

Williamson, who started her career as an elementary school teacher 17 years ago, was hired as the District's director of research, evaluation and assessment two years ago.

In her new role Williamson will oversee educational programming, curriculum development and instructional strategies, according to the District.

She also will be involved in hiring and evaluating principals and staff and in professional development programming, budgeting and advisory committee leadership and advisement.

“We conducted a search for this position and through the process Dr. Williamson proved to be our best and brightest candidate," said District Superintendent Dr. Antonio Shelton.

Williamson was chosen "based on her experience, strong work ethic, familiarity with SMMUSD educational services and programs and her willingness and interest to continue to grow and learn,” Shelton said

Williamson replaces Dr. Jacqueline Mora, who served as assistant superintendent for six years until her unexpected death last September after a five-month battle with an illness.

In her current role, Williamson coordinates the district-wide assessment program for grades preK through 12 and manages school accountability plans and other aspects of federal categorical programs, District officials said.

She also assists principals and teachers with analyzing their school data to identify low-achieving students, design effective remediation and provide required information for state and local reports.

In addition Williamson supports "in the development, implements and managing of the educational services department budget," District officials said.

Williamson -- who will assume her new role on March 8 -- joined SMMUSD in May 2022 following varying rolls in the Palmdale and Newhall school districts.

She has served as elementary school principal, assistant principal, district learning support teacher, learning support teacher, master teacher, beginning teacher support and assessment provider and elementary teacher.

Williamson holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies with a minor in Chicano Studies, a master’s degree in education in curriculum and instruction and a doctorate in educational leadership from Cal State Northridge.

“I am committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where every student can thrive, every staff member feels valued, and every member of the community is heard," Williamson said in a statement.

"I am excited about the opportunity to collaborate with the talented team already in place and to work together towards achieving our shared goals of academic excellence and community engagement."
