November 22, 2023 -- Two suspects were arrested Tuesday after stealing a safe from a residence near Downtown Santa Monica, according to police.

At around 12:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 500 block of 9th Street to investigate a possible residential burglary after a suspicious vehicle was seen driving away, police officials said.
"Officers in the area located a matching vehicle leaving the general area, while additional officers confirmed the residential burglary had occurred," said Lt. Erika Aklufi, the Police Department spokesperson.
Officers initiated a traffic stop and detained the occupants of the vehicle, Aklufi said.
"During the investigation, SMPD officers located a safe inside the suspects’ vehicle belonging to the resident, along with other items of evidence," Aklufi said.
The occupants of the vehicle, Christofer Martinez Infante, 23, and Jeffrey Owen Wright, 22, were charged with residential burglary and are being held without bail, according to police.
"This investigation is on-going and limited information is available at this time," Aklufi said.
During the first eight months of of 2023 there have been 255 residential burglaries reported in Santa Monica, up from 217 during the same period last year, according to police data.
That's the most residential burglaries reported during the same time period in at least the last five years.
