By Lookout Staff July 6, 2020 -- A man jumped to his death from a freeway overpass in Santa Monica Saturday, marking the second public suicide in two weeks and the 12th in the beach city in less than two and a half years. The Los Angeles County Coroner identified the victim Sunday as Lucius DeShawn Wade, a 34-year-old homeless man. Wade apparently jumped from the Pacific Coast Highway-Arizona Avenue pedestrian bridge early Saturday morning and was dragged several hundred feet by a northbound vehicle.
Police received a call at 4:40 a.m. reporting a person down in the 1500 block of PCH just north of the McClure Tunnel, said Santa Monica Police Lt. Rudy Flores. "They located a male deceased in the northbound lanes," Flores said. "Based upon the evidence at the scene, the subject may have jumped off the bridge, was struck by a vehicle and dragged a couple of hundred feet" down PCH. Alexander's death marked the 12th public suicide in Santa Monica since February 2018. It comes less than two weeks after Jason Alexander, a 38-year-old hypnotherapist, shot himself with a handgun in Virginia Avenue Park ("Body Found in Park Was 11th Public Suicide in Santa Monica in Two and a Half Years," June 26, 2020 ). Five of the public suicides have been committed by leaping from Downtown Public Parking Structures and three were committed at the Santa Monica Pier -- two by leaping and one by hanging. Two others were committed by using a handgun and by walking in front of an oncoming train, according to data from the coroner's office. |
