February 6, 2020 -- Visitors to five Santa Monica establishments may have been exposed to measles last week, Los Angeles County Health officials warned Wednesday.

Four of the patients who have contracted the disease were LA County residents "exposed to an unimmunized, international visitor who was infectious with measles," according to the County health advisory.

The Santa Monica establishments were among the more than 30 locations on the Westside where visitors may have been exposed to the virus.

The following Santa Monica locations and hours of exposure are:

Pinkberry Yogurt, 1612 Montana Avenue, last Monday between 6:45 and 9 p.m. and again last Tuesday between 6:05 and 8:30 p.m.

Kye’s, 1518 Montana Avenue, last Tuesday between 5:45 and 8 p.m.

United Oil 76 Gas Station (went inside office), 1776 Cloverfield Boulevard, last Wednesday between 8:15 and 10:30 p.m.

Starbucks, 2525 Wilshire Boulevard, last Friday between 9:23 a.m. and noon.

Individuals should contact their health care provider if they develop measles symptoms, health officials said.

Common symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis (red eyes) and a rash which usually appears 10 to 12 days after the exposure.

Especially at risk are those with weakened immune systems or persons who may not have been vaccinated against measles, officials said.

"For those who are not protected, measles is a highly contagious and potentially severe disease," according to Dr. Muntu Davis, the county's health officer.

Last October, a person with measles visited two Santa Monica locations ("Measles Patient Visited Two Santa Monica Locations Monday, Health Officials Say," October 10, 2019).

Another patient who contracted the virus after traveling abroad visited two other Santa Monica locations last July ("Person Infected with Measles Visited Two Santa Monica Locations Last Week," July 24, 2019).

Most of the cases identified in LA County last year were contracted by persons who were not vaccinated, health officials said.
