May 24, 20019 -- Santa Monica will celebrates Memorial Day weekend the traditional way -- with food, music and a ceremonial salute at the city's historic Woodlawn Cemetery.

The festivities kick off Sunday when Main Street hosts the 6th Annual MAINopoly: Taste of Main Street from 1 to 6 p.m. at some of the street's best food and beverage establishments.

The event -- which helps raise funds for Main Street's annual Summer SOULstice festival -- is a "fun, interactive community event that mirrors the classic board game," organizers said.

MAINopoly "gives participants a culinary walking tour of Main Street's restaurants, retail stores, cafes, ice cream spots and coffee shops, where they can exchange fake "MAInopoly dollars" for food and beverage tastings at participating locations on their game board.

Restaurants will also offer food and drink specials, including $4 draft beers, $5 cocktails and $5 shots, for those with the official wristband. Select retail locations, as well as Santa Monica Travel & Tourism, will offer in-store activations and merchandise specials.

Other activities include a beer garden, "Go to Jail" VIP lounge (21+) with hosted beer, food, DJ, snacks and games. Attendees are encouraged to dress in "Monopoly"-inspired or patriotic attire.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra concludes its 74th season with a free Memorial Day Weekend Concert at Santa Monica High School's historic Barnum Hall.

The concert -- which "shines a spotlight on emerging talent" -- features Nicholas Mendez Del Valle, winner of the Symphony’s 2019 Piano Concerto Competition, performing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

The program opens with Verdi’s Overture to “La Forza del Destino” and closes with Brahms’ Symphony No. 4.

The long weekend concludes Monday at 11:30 a.m. when the Santa Monica Woodlawn Cemetery, Mausoleum & Mortuary holds its 81st Annual Memorial Day Observance.

Local civic groups, dignitaries and music performances will help mark the occasion, organizers said.

Free parking is available at Santa Monica College’s Lot 4 at the corner of 16th Street and Pico Boulevard. There will be shuttle service to the cemetery from Lot 4 and the Elks Lodge at 1040 Pico Boulevard.

The Cemetery is wheelchair accessible. For those requiring assistance, shuttle service will be provided from the drop-off location to the event site on the Cemetery grounds.

Big Blue Bus Lines 7 and 41 will be in operation on Memorial Day with stops at 14th Street and Pico Boulevard.
