By Lookout Staff May 17, 2019 -- It promises to be a magical afternoon when Santa Monica College’s Emeritus Concert Band performs next month at The Broad Stage. The "through line" of the free concert featuring arrangements of orchestra classics, movies themes and original compositions for band is" magic," concert promoters said. The band -- composed mostly of retirees -- will perform under the baton of Yosuke Miyoshi Sunday June 2 at 2 p.m. at the Broad Stage at the SMC Performing Arts Center, 1310 11th Street. “The SMC Emeritus Concert Band will be topnotch entertainment for your Sunday afternoon,” said Dr. Scott C. Silverman, Associate Dean of SMC Emeritus. “It will be a great time, so bring your friends and family.” Some members of the Emeritus Band -- which is is made up of brass, woodwinds and percussion -- are in their eighties and nineties and have played for four decades with the band, which was founded in 1968. "The variety of musical and life experience that each band member brings to the group fuels an environment of ongoing inspiration," organizers said. The 60-member band boasts a musical library of more than 800 arrangements, ranging from John Phillip Sousa marches and Broadway show tunes to rock and roll. Seating for Sunday's concert is on a first-arrival basis. There is ample free parking on the premises. The band is part of Santa Monica College’s Emeritus program, established in 1975 to offer free classes and special programs to older adults.
