September 13, 2017 -- Young people posing as Santa Monica High School students are engaging a door-to-door fundraising scam, according to School District officials. The solicitors are asking for donations or selling magazine subscriptions allegedly supporting the Samohi Regional Occupational Program (ROP), Santa Monica-Maliby Unified School District officials said. Student clubs and booster organizations conducting fundraisers always have Samohi student photo identification available for proof, officials said. Gail Pinkser, the District's spokesperson, said the district is unaware of any victims of the scam so far. "We're not sure anyone has been scammed or if they happened to target astute residents that didn't think something was right andd contacted the school district," Pinksker told the Lookout. Recipients of the district's email notice were asked to share the information with neighbors who may not have students currently attending district schools.
