May 4, 2017 -- The Santa Monica College Global Motion World Dance Company will showcase dance styles from around the world during spring, school officials announced this week.

Composed of SMC students, Global Motion "is a World Dance performance company that expresses the concept of humanity in the form of global citizenship," organizers said.

The performance will feature "traditional and contemporary World Dance styles, including West African, Contemporary Ballet, Belly Dance, Hip Hop, Indonesian, Lyrical Jazz, Mexican Folklorico, Nicaraguan, Salsa, Samoan, and Spanish Contemporary."

Founded by SMC Dance Department chair Judith Douglas, Global Motion is under the artistic direction of SMC dance professors Raquel Ramirez, founder and director of a Mexican folklórico performance group, and Sri Susilowati, a dancer, choreographer and storyteller originally from Indonesia.

"Global Motion provides a platform for SMC students to experience and learn about other cultures through dance while working with professional choreographers who are experts in the field of World Dance," organizers said.

The troupe -- which has performed throughout California and Mexico for more than 30 years -- recently returned from performances in Beijing, China; Bracciano, Italy, and Santiago, Chile.

Faculty choreographers are Laura Canellias, Keali’i Ceballos, Gustavo Gonzalez, Jennifer Jesswein, Angela Jordan, Caleb Shariff Mitchell, Laura Smyth, and Sri Susilowati.

The guest choreographer is Alondra Ramirez, an SMC alumna choreographed for Global Motion’s international tours.

Student choreographers are Long Jacky Chen, Naomi Chen, Alan Medina, Karen Marotta and Daniel Salgado.

Tickets, which sell out quickly, range from $18-$20. Parking is free. For tickets, go to www.smc.edu/eventsinfo or call (310) 434-3005.
