December 12, 2017 -- Santa Monica College's new physical education facility has been awarded the highest level of certification by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), school officials announced Monday.

The LEED Platinum award makes SMC's Core Performance Center (CPC) on the college's main campus one of four buildings in the ‘New Construction’ category in Santa Monica to earn the distinction, officials said.

Designed by Gensler and constructed by Bernards, the 63,500-square foot, three-story Core Performance Cente houses SMC’s Athletics, Physical Education, Fitness and Dance programs.

“In addition to being a beautiful centerpiece in the heart of the Santa Monica College’s main campus," said SMC Superintendent/President Dr. Kathryn E. Jeffery, "the Core Performance Center provides an inspirational setting that speaks literally and figuratively to SMC’s commitment to sustainability.

"The CPC will contribute to student achievement and enhance the quality of life for students, faculty and staff,” Jeffery said. “We sought to design and construct a facility that met academic needs and, also, the highest energy efficiency standards."

The new facility -- which features a fitness center, modern dance studios, classrooms, athletic locker rooms, offices and a climbing wall -- was awarded the highest points on the Green Building Council's scorecard "for innovation and regional priority," officials said.

It also won top scores in energy and atmosphere, indoor environmental quality and water efficiency, which is provided by a closed-loop, Central Cooling plant in the building’s basement.

The CPC is SMC’s first LEED Platinum-rated building, with two others -- the Information Technology Building and the Humanities and Social Services Building (HSS) -- having achieved LEED Silver status.

SMC’s new Media and Design and KCRW Media Center is also on track to earn Silver level certification, officials said ("Santa Monica College Opens New Media Campus, KCRW Center," December 4, 2017).

Like the other LEED Certified buildings, the new Core Performance Center was funded primarily through Propositions S and AA.

Approved by Santa Monica and Malibu voters in 2004, Measure S was a $135 million bond to buy land and renovate facilities.

Measure AA, a $295 million bond to replace Santa Monica College’s outdated facilities, won by a landslide in 2008.

The CPC stands is one of 806 New Construction LEED Platinum-certified commercial projects, both privately and publicly owned, in the country, college officials said. There are a total of 1,692 LEED Platinum commercial projects nationwide.
