April 13, 2017 -- A launch party for the Spring 2017 issue of "Santa Monica Review" -- the only nationally distributed literary magazine published by a U.S. community college -- will be held this month, college officials announced this week.

The party featuring readings from four recent contributors to the magazine will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 30, in The Edye at the SMC Performing Arts Center at Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street.

Short story writer and novelist Michael Jaime-Becerra, whose short-story collection, "Every Night Is Ladies’ Night" was a recipient of a California Book Award, will open the literary celebration.

Reading from their work will be SMC writing instructor Stefan Mattesich, SMC writing workshop alum Grace Singh Smith, memoirist Leslie Brody and short story writer Ryan Ridge.

The launch party “offers one of the most reliably high-quality and accessible opportunities to enjoy literary performance in Southern California, and at an intimate venue,” said Andrew Tonkovich, the Review's editor.

The latest issue of the "Review" features 17 pieces from contributors that include Barry Gifford, whose 1990 novel "Sailor and Lula" was adapted into a Palme d'Or–winning film by David Lynch, and Karl Taro Greenfeld, author of the novel "The Subprimes," a dystopian parody released last year.

Other contributors include Vicki Forman, the author of the 2009 memoir of premature motherhood "This Lovely Life," and Gary Fincke, whose short story collection "The Killer’s Dog" was released this month.

The Spring issue also includes a chapter from the latest book by memoirist Leslie Brody, a political meditation by California poet and essayist Gary Soto and fiction from SMC writing instructor Stefan Mattessich.

Also featured in the issue are works by Ben Slotky, Ryan Ridge, Mark Gozonsky, Lisa Alvarez, John Mandelberg Oxana Safronovo.

The Spring 2017 edition’s cover art is by Jared Millar.

Copies of "Santa Monica Review" will be available at the LA Times Festival of Books held April 15 and 16 at the USC University Park Campus. Attendees can receive a free sample copy at Booth No. 72.

"Santa Monica Review" is available for sale online at www.smc.edu/sm_review and in-store at the SMC Bookstore, Beyond Baroque in Venice, Skylight Books and other area booksellers.

Copies are also available by mail and by subscription through Santa Monica Review, Santa Monica College, 1900 Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica 90405.

The publication costs $7 per issue or $12 for the two issues each year.
