April 12, 2016 -- You could say Percossa likes to think outside the box when it comes to percussion. So does Circa when it comes to the circus.

Both imaginative troupes from far-flung parts of the world will perform this month at The Broad Stage at Santa Monica College's Performing Arts Center on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street.

On Saturday, April 16, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Netherlands-based Percossa will perform "Box Brothers," the tale of four siblings who live in four wooden boxes and set out on a quest for happiness that becomes an energetic, comical and acrobatic journey through world music.

Percossa uses found objects and wooden boxes to "turn Japanese percussion, African rhythms, jazz, and funk music into a hand-clapping, toe-tapping comic adventure for all ages," event organizers said.

"'The Box Brothers' is a unique and invigorating show that blends music, acrobatics and theatre into one electrifying rhythm," said the Vancouver International Children's Festival.

The production, which has been touring since February 2011, has been staged in Poland, Germany, Canada, Russia and the U.S. Tickets for The Broad Stage performance start at $20.

What Percossa does for percussion, Circa, a theatre troupe from Brisbane, Australia, does for the circus with "Carnival of the Animals," a wildly imaginative romp through the animal kingdom that will take The Broad Stage April 28 to 30.

Set to French composer Camille Saint-Saëns’ "playful and magical" composition of the same name, the production "brings the joy of the animal kingdom to the stage in a sophisticated and visually stunning physical theatre extravaganza for children big and small," organizers said.

"Through inventive movement and stunning projection design, Circa creates a whimsical new tale of creatures that tumble, fly, leap and spin," they said.

Circa's artistic director Yaron Lifschitz called Circa’s creations "stirring tributes to humanity, affirming the potential of our bodies, the depth of our emotions and our infinite capacity for wonder."

The production's video designer, Michaela French, said she wanted to create the sense of slipping "into an alternate reality where the magic of the circus is the most important part of life and the entire world can be carried in a small suitcase."

Performances will take place Thursday, April 28 through Saturday April 30 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $15.
