May 18, 2015 -- They’ve “hooped it up” at the White House with Michelle Obama, and now KidTribe is bringing its hula hoop fitness concert to Santa Monica’s Tongva Park this month.

Founded in 2002 by Kellee McQuinn, KidTribe began as an after-school hip-hop dance class and has grown to include more than 3 million participating schoolchildren in the U.S. and Great Britain, according to its website.

KidTribe will lead its high-energy class as part of Tongva Park’s continuing Family Saturday series, on Saturday, May 23, at Tongva Park, 1615 Ocean Avenue, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Kidtribe has performed its “Hoopapalooza Fitness Concert” at the White House for the annual Easter Egg Roll, and also in conjunction with the first lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative, its website said.

Each year the performance troupe “goes from school to school activating 10,000 kids a month” at school assemblies. Thousands of teachers have been trained and are currently instructing KidTribe classes and incorporating its curricula, its website says

This season marks the second season of cultural programming at Tongva Park. Events are free and open to the public, said Allison Ostrovsky of the City’s Monica Cultural Affairs Division.

“Santa Monica’s Cultural Affairs Division brings the City’s art scene to life for residents and visitors each year by supporting engaging and accessible cultural events for all ages throughout the year,” said Ostrovsky.

Cultural Affairs also manages the landmark Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and presents and produces programs at the Annenberg Community Beach House, the historic Miles Playhouse, 1450 Ocean, and in the city’s parks, Ostrovsky said.
