December 16, 2015 -- Old-fashioned games, a tiny toy theater and plenty of movies are in store for the holidays at the Santa Monica Public Library.

The library marks its 125th anniversary on Wednesday, December 16, with games played back when it opened its doors, before Hemingway and the “Lost Generation” were even born.

“Old Time Fun and Games” at 3:45 p.m. in the Main Library Activity Room will feature paper dolls and games of skill such as pick-up sticks and jacks during the free 45-minute program, library officials said.

Old-fashioned fun continues Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Main Library Multipurpose Room when artist Yulya Dukhovny, founder of Microscope Toy Theater, presents “A Real Elephant,” a miniature theater production for the entire family.

“This classic Russian children’s story tells the tale of a little girl who wishes a real elephant would visit her,” library officials said.

Since founding Microscope Toy Theater in 2010, Dukhovny has performed at numerous venues including International Festivals of Toy Theater in Germany, France, Mexico and Russia.

Following the performance attendees are invited to participate in a paper craft workshop for ages 6 and up. Admission is free and limited seating is on a first arrival basis.

Families looking for activities during the Christmas break have events to choose from at the Main Library between December 28 and 31.

On Monday, December 28, the library will screen “Minions,” the 3-D computer-animated comedy that quickly became the second highest grossing animated film of all time when it was released this year.

Tuesday offers a 30-minute Family Musical Story Time, suitable for children ages 2 and over, followed by a Luce Puppets presentation Wednesday of “Aesop’s Fables,” an ancient Greek storyteller whose tales feature animals and inanimate objects that speak.

The Holiday events end Thursday, December 31 with a 90-minute Lego Block Party suitable for children ages 4 and over.
