Santa Monica Review Publishes New Issue, Holds Reading |

By Lookout Staff September 23, 2013 – Santa Monica College’s acclaimed national literary arts journal has released its Fall Issue, and to celebrate, some of the talent showcased will read from their work next month. The event Sunday, October 13 will be hosted by The Nation magazine contributor and local community radio programmer Jon Wiener and will feature Ron Carlson and Michelle Latiolais, two local writers who have won national reputations and whose work appears in the latest issue of the Santa Monica Review. Also featured in the event – which will take place at 4 p.m. in The Edye at the SMC Performing Arts Center – will be Los Angeles Review of Books founder Tom Lutz and SMR founder and novelist Jim Krusoe. The fall issue of the Review presents 20 new short stories and essays, including another in a series of autobiographical pieces from California poet Christopher Buckley. Other writers featured in the issue are SMC Creative Writing Workshop alums Alex R. Jones and Grace Singh Smith, prizewinning short fiction writer Geoff Wyss and graphic novelist Jeffrey Chapman. Also featured are novelist Barry Gifford, who “bends the rules of narrative,” Rich Ives who “experiments,” and Marilyn Abildscov and Linda Rui Feng, who “explore and rewrite their own memories,” according to the event sponsors. Social justice graphic artist Andrea Bowers produced the cover art for the Review's fall edition. Published twice yearly, the Santa Monica Review “showcases the literary voices of established authors and emerging writers,” according to college officials. Some of the writers featured during its 25 years of publication are Victoria Patterson, Gary Amdahl, Alan Cheuse, the late James Houston, Gary Soto, and Jervey Tervalon. The Santa Monica Review is the only nationally distributed literary magazine published by a community college and its work has been included in the prestigious Best American Short Stories series and other anthologies. Santa Monica Review is available for sale online and at the SMC Bookstore, Beyond Baroque in Venice, and other area booksellers.
