January 10, 2010 -- Visitors to the Annenberg Community Beach House are in for a treat Monday as the strains of the Lyris String Quartet waft over the shore in the evening air.

The musicians said they have chosen works that inspired film composers. Their program expresses a compositional style that peaked during the “golden age” of Hollywood when the Beach House was first built.

“Musical metaphors with an undulating tone throughout generally refer to the movement of the ocean, making the Beach House setting a perfect visual counterpoint to this performance of the Ravel Quartet,” event spokepeople explained.

The concert will also include music by Webern and Shostakovich.
Founded in 2008, The Lyris Quartet is already an L.A. fixture, with performances at Bing Theater at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Broad Stage, Zipper Hall at The Colburn School, Royce Hall, and Disney Hall under their belt.

Violinist Alyssa Park, the youngest prizewinner in the history of the Tchaikovsky International Competition, and violinist Shalini Vijayan bring a passion for the modern repertoire to their programs, and often play the works of contemporary composers.

The Quartet's latest project is a summer festival called “Hear-Now.” Slated for 2011, it will feature new works by novice and veteran local composers.

The Beach House concert is part of an on-going series of twice-monthly performances called Beach=Culture.
