Santa Monica College Building Wins Design Award | |||||
By Lookout Staff December 19, 2011 -- The design for Santa Monica College's Performing Arts Campus East Wing facility has won an award from the Southern California Development Forum (SCDF) for design excellence in the “Un-built Concepts” category. DLR Group WWCOT, a local architecture firm, and the college received the award for the project, which just completed the design phase, at a banquet last Tuesday.
“This addition is a high quality building with great interior space which utilizes natural light in public spaces to help connect it to the adjacent plaza,” the jury said in giving the award. “Its use of high quality materials and planar surface detailing connects it nicely to the existing main theater.” Among the jury members for the design awards this year was Jeffrey Averill, AIA, Campus Architect at UCLA; Gregory B. Ames of Trammell Crow Company, and William Robertson of Cushman & Wakefield.
The 12,000-square-foot Performing Arts Campus East Wing facility will provide Santa Monica College with state-of-the-art performance and rehearsal studios that contain a multi-purpose room, offices, and music classrooms. This project is part of Santa Monica College’s recent round of performing arts improvements, which has included The Broad Stage and Edye Second Space. The SCDF is an organization dedicated to providing continuing education opportunities for real estate and design professionals in Southern California. Each year, the organization sponsors an awards program to recognize local charities, and to honor the contributions and creative work of architects, engineers, and contractors. DLR Group WWCOT is known for its sustainable design for a diverse group of public and private sector clients and local communities. Its offices across the country and in China provide architecture, engineering, planning, and interior design services. |
