December 14, 2011 -- Santa will arrive at the pier Saturday, but instead of reindeers and a sleigh, the man in red will be escorted to the Merry-Go-Round Building on a dory by lifeguards and harbor patrols.

Santa's grand entrance on the Pier Bridge will be followed by photo ops and free carousel rides until 3 p.m. Soda Jerks, the Pier’s old-fashioned soda fountain, will serve up hot cocoa and assorted holiday treats.

And if you want more than a snapshot with Santa, adults and children will have the chance to get their photo taken with lifelike characters from Cirque du Soleil's OVO show from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Those who want giveaways and discounted tickets for the Cirque Shows that will be coming to the Pier in January can visit the special Cirque du Soleil Truck, which offers "a mobile interactive experience," Pier officials said.

At 2:30 p.m., catch favorite carols crooned by a contemporary caroling troupe presented by Green Brooms Music Academy that will stroll the planks of the Pier.

And amidst all the fun, don't forget those in need this holiday season. For the second year, the Santa Monica Pier will be partnering with Upward Bound House to collect canned food items for families in need.

The local non-profit agency provides housing, supportive services and advocacy for homeless families with children. Food items will continue to be collected in the Historic Merry-Go-Round Building through December 18.

The world-famous Santa Monica Pier offers a variety of entertainment and shopping including Pacific Park amusement park, Heal the Bay Aquarium, a historic 1922 Merry-Go-Round, an old-fashioned soda fountain, plus specialty shops/carts, eateries, and several full-service restaurants.

Open year-round, and parking is available for a fee on a first come, first served basis.
