Santa Monica Urges Residents to Give the Gift of Preparedness

By Lookout Staff

December 1, 2011 -- It may seem no more exciting than finding that the present under the tree you were dying to unwrap had only underwear and socks.

But in the case of an emergency, it can come in handy. Santa Monica officials are urging residents to "show family and friends how much you care about them this season by giving" them flashlights, radios and energy bars.

And they'll make it easy to do on December 10, when the City's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will host the second One Stop Prep Shop for emergency preparedness at the Santa Monica Main Public Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.

”This unique event provides an opportunity for those who live, work, and play in Santa Monica to get prepared for emergencies in a fast and convenient way," said Paul Weinberg, the City's coordinator for Emergency Services.

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., local vendors, Fisher Lumber, REI, the Emergency CafE9, SOS Survival Products and the American Red Cross of Santa Monica will be selling emergency preparedness supplies in the Main Library courtyard.

"The City of Santa Monica wants to make it as easy as possible for people to be prepared for emergencies," Weinberg said. "OEM encourages everyone to have seven days' worth of supplies at home, at work, and in our cars."

Vendors will be selling emergency preparedness kits and supplies for families, businesses, children, and pets, he added.
