Police Department Launches New Crime Site

By Lookout Staff

May 19, 2009 – Want to know if a burglary has taken place on your street during the past month? Or curious about how many shoplifting incidents took place on your neighborhood commercial strip this week?

A new web site launched by the Santa Monica Police Department Monday makes that information available on a map of the area with a few clicks of a mouse.

The new crime system, developed in conjunction with the City’s Information Systems Department, allows the public direct access to crime data for the City of Santa Monica. Updated daily, the data is available for crimes that have been reported within the last 90 days.

“The data in the system may be searched by crime type within proximity to an address, intersection or landmark, as well as for the entire City or within the boundaries of the Police Department beats,” according to a statement issued by the police department.

Due to the unique and sensitive issues surrounding sex-related crimes, the Police Department does not include information about those crimes through the system. In order to obtain information about sex-related crimes, please contact the Criminal Investigations Division at (310) 458-8451.

The maps and reports from the system can be printed or saved in PDF format.

The system may be accessed via the Internet at http://www.santamonicapd.org/crimemapping.
