Police Seek Leads in Santa Monica Arson Spree

By Lookout Staff

July 2, 2009 – Police are looking for an arsonist or arsonists suspected of torching three parked cars late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning near the eastern edge of Santa Monica.

The arsonist struck between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. on the 1500 block of Stanford Street and on the 2900 block of Colorado Avenue.

All three cars were older models, police said. No injuries were reported.

“You don’t normally have three fires in a three-hour period,” said Fire Chief Jim Hone. “It’s a rarity, period, for our community.”

The first fire was reported at around 11:20 p.m., the second at 3:30 a.m. and the last at 5 a.m., according to reports.

Two of the vehicles were partially damaged; the third was totally burned.

“We’re currently investigating this along with the police department,” Hone said.

Anyone with information should call Santa Monica Police at 310.458.8426.
