December 9 – Former School Board member Pam Brady
-- an active proponent of the merit system -- was elected chair
of the Personnel Commission last week.
Brady, who served 12 years and is known across the state as an seasoned and
passionate education advocate, has been a member of the commission for six years.
“Brady expressed her desire to deepen collaborative relationships with
the community, the District, the Board of Education, and SEIU in order to maintain
excellence in education in our schools and access and opportunity for all our
students and employees,” according to a district statement.
Brady is currently serving as the president of the California State PTA after
she was installed as the PTA President by Jack O’Connell, the superintendent
of Public Instruction, at the Annual PTA Convention in 2007.
At a meeting of top education officials last month, Brady expressed her position
that educational goals cannot be compromised during the current State budget
crisis.
"There was a time when we talked about an investment," Brady said.
"It isn't about a balance sheet, it's about investing in California, it's
about what California was in the past and what it can be."
Brady said a tax hike should avert the proposed cuts to public education.
“People are willing to pay,” Brady said. “We have to get
to the point were we are all willing to share the burden. We need to get louder
and clearer. We’re talking about an investment here.”
Brady, who also works as a Community Mobilization Manager for the American
Cancer Society, holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
A longtime resident of Malibu, she has been recognized as Woman of the Year
by the YMCA and the California State Assembly.
