Driver Takes Wrong Turn onto Promenade

By Jorge Casuso

August 18 -- A 66-year-old driver who was apparently confused took a wrong turn onto the Third Street Promenade Monday morning, ending up more than half a block down the pedestrian strip, police said.

No one was injured in the incident, which took place less than a block from the Farmers Market where an elderly driver killed ten and injured dozens last month when he lost control of his car.

In Monday's incident, the motorist, who is a Los Angeles resident, drove her car over the sidewalk and onto the street, which is blocked from vehicular access by four bollards that bookend each block, police said.

The incident occurred at around 10 a.m., before the late morning foot traffic hits the popular visitor destination.

Police asked the driver, whose identity has not been released, to take a DMV examination to determine if she is fit to drive, said Lt. Frank Fabrega, the police department spokesman.

The police report will be forwarded to the City Attorney's Office, because driving on the Promenade is a violation of the Municipal Code, Fabrega said.

The physical proximity of Monday's incident to last month's tragic accident was "a strange coincidence," said Kathleen Rawson, executive director of the Bayside District Corporation, which runs the Downtown, including the Promenade.
