April 17 -- An elderly pedestrian was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Santa Monica Boulevard, police said.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m., when a vehicle driving southbound on 23rd Street stopped for a red light at Santa Monica, police said. When westbound traffic cleared, the vehicle turned and struck the pedestrian walking east in a marked crosswalk.

The pedestrian, who has only been identified as an 85-year-old resident of Pacific Palisades, was transported to a local hospital, where he is being treated for serious injuries, said Lt. Frank Fabrega, a police department spokesman.

The driver of the vehicle, a resident of Santa Monica, was interviewed at the scene and released pending further investigation, Fabrega said. Police are investigating the cause of the collision.
