Last Stop for Transit Mall Before Final Decision

By Lookout Staff

The public got its last chance to review the final design of the City's ambitious Downtown Transit Mall Monday night before the project heads off to the City Council for final approval later this year.

The transit mall project, which has been in the works for more than two years, is expected to ease congestion in the downtown area and create a more pedestrian friendly feel for an area known for its traffic jams.

Bill Zein, a civil engineer with the City, said that 40 people came to the meeting to see the light fixtures, different types of concrete, bus benches and tree grates that will be part of the overhaul.

The project calls for the creation of an eastbound priority lane for busses on Santa Monica Boulevard between Ocean Avenue and Fifth Street and a westbound priority lane on Broadway between Fifth Street and Ocean Avenue.

The area's sidewalks also will be widened, new trees planted and new light fixtures, bus shelters, benches, signs and electronic information kiosks installed. A public art component also will be part of the design.

The project is expected to go before the council in December with construction slated to begin in January 2001. Construction is expected to take 16 months.
