Santa Monica Set to Glow Saturday Night

By Lookout Staff

July 16 -- Don’t be surprised Saturday night if you hear pirates singing sea shanties around a fanciful bonfire on the beach or spot a new species of marine tumbleweed floating offshore.

They’re just a smattering of the many art installations and events that will take place between 7 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday morning as part of Glow.

Presented in partnership with Bayside District Corporation, Pier Restoration Corporation and the Santa Monica Convention and Visitors Bureau, Glow brings together more than 100 participating artists.

The different art works will make wandering the beaches surrounding Santa Monica Pier and strolling Palisades Park an enchanting experience. Beachcombers will encounter everything from a mirage on the sand to shipboard poets reciting poetry to an underwater grotto under the Pier.

In Palisades Park strollers can spot one of the park’s rare nocturnal life forms or watch as the Senior Center is turned into a gigantic kaleidoscope with captivating images shining from its windows.

On the Pier itself an orchestra will perform on Pacific Park’s new Ferris wheel at 8:15 p.m. and KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad will spin discs on the southside of the pier at 10.

A parade of solar koi will fly through the park and down the Pier Bridge and finish with a theremin performance at 11 p.m. and a performance in the Carousel at 2:00 a.m. by White Rainbow.
