May 27, 2020 -- The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is seeking qualified candidates to serve on its Citizen's Bond Oversight and Financial Oversight committees.

The Bond Oversight Committee for Measure SMS -- a record $485 million bond to upgrade and replace outdated facilities in Santa Monica schools -- has one vacancy for a member of the community at-large, District officials said.

"The member is appointed by the Board upon the recommendation of the Superintendent from a list of candidates that have each submitted written applications," officials said.

The chosen candidate will be one of two members of the community at-large serving on the seven-member committee.

The measure, which passed with 72 percent of the vote, is bankrolled by Santa Monica property owners and had no fixed list of projects when it was approved.

The bond was placed on the ballot after the School Board created School Facility Improvement Districts (SFIDs) for Santa Monica and Malibu in anticipation of the latter's possible split.

Unlike the at-large seat on the Bond Committee, applicants for the Financial Oversight Committee seat must have "a depth of business and/or financial expertise."

There are four upcoming vacancies with terms beginning July 1, District officials said. Two incumbents have expressed interest in continuing to serve.

The committee is scheduled to hold ten meetings through June 10, 2021.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday, June 23 and forms available via the District’s website can be scanned and emailed to foc@smmusd.org.

Application forms for the Bond Oversight Committee are available through the Superintendent’s Office or via the website

Applications can be mailed to the district office (1651 16th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90404) or scanned and emailed to boc@smmusd.org.
