February 3, 2020 -- A man leaped to his death from the top of a Downtown Parking Structure Sunday, marking the fifth such suicide in Santa Monica in less than a year and a half.

Officers discovered the body in the alley below Parking Structure 2 at around 10 a.m., said Capt. Candice Cobarrubias., the Police Department spokesperson.

The man -- a white male in his late 40s or early 50s -- had no identification on his person.

"The coroner will conduct their investigation and provide any details regarding the male subject at a later time," Cobarrubias said.

Since September 2018 four other persons have taken their lives by leaping from the roofs of Downtown public parking structures.

Santa Monica officials did nor respond by deadline when asked if anything could be done to prevent another suicide from happening, such as installing rooftop fencing.

A search of the internet by the Lookout found few reports of suicides in California committed by leaping from parking structures.

Santa Monica Downtown parking structures are threatening to overtake the Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena -- once known locally as "Suicide Bridge" -- as a frequent site for suicides.

Suicides at the bridge dropped -- from eight in 2017 to three in 2018 -- after the City installed emergency fencing along the sides, according to Pasadena Police officials.

Tonight, the City Council’s Public Safety Committee will consider proposed designs for permanent barriers, according to Pasadenanow.com.

Parking Structure 2, on 2nd Street just north of Arizona Avenue, was the site of the most recent suicide at a Santa Monica parking structure.

Last August, Brad Bolton, a 49-year-old former physical trainer, leaped to his death from the structure's roof, which, like the top of the other Downtown structures has no fencing ("Personal Trainer Brad Bolton Remembered as an Inspirational Force," August 29, 2019).

The series of suicides began on September 5, 2018 when Gary Stewart, a longtime music industry executive, jumped from the top of Structure 4 on 2nd Street just north of Arizona Avenue.

Three months later, on December 1, a woman in her 60s committed suicide by jumping off the roof of the same structure.

Last April 12, a man jumped to his death from the top floor of Parking Structure 7 at Santa Monica Place.
