September 13, 2019 -- A suspected burglar was shot and wounded by Santa Monica police Thursday evening after he barricaded himself in a backyard with a gun, where he was confronted by police and taken into custody.

The burglary was reported at around 6:20 p.m. in the 1100 block of Pine Street after a resident arrived home and found the armed burglar inside his home, police said during press conference Thursday.

"The male then pointed a firearm at the resident, at which time the resident fled from the location, ran to a neighbor's house and called 911," said Lt. Candice Cobarrubias, the Police Department spokesperson.

Coast Event Information

When police arrived, the suspect was still inside the residence and "had started removing objects from the home," Cobarrubias said.

"We made contact with the suspect in the driveway of the residence holding the firearm in his hand," she said.

The suspect ran and barricaded himself in a rear yard in the 1100 block of Cedar Street, Cobarrubias said.

The officers created a perimeter and with assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department air unit were able to "maintain visual contact of the suspect, so they basically directed us to where the suspect was."

The officers found the suspect barricaded in the yard, she said.

"We encountered the suspect, the suspect did not comply, a shooting occurred," Cobarrubias said. "The suspect still was not compliant after being shot in the abdomen."

Police then deployed a K-9 and took the suspect into custody, she said.

An officer who is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) rendered first aid to the suspect, who was then transported to a local hospital, she said.

No officers were hurt during the incident.

The name of the suspect, who was in stable condition, has not been released.
