Santa Monica Police Captain to Head Force in Home of Microsoft

September 5, 2019 -- Santa Monica Police Captain Darrell Lowe has been tapped to become the police chief of Redmond, Washington, the home of Microsoft.
Lowe, a 26 year veteran of the force, was responsible for reconfiguring Santa Monica's police beats when the Expo line arrived in 2015, City officials said.
During his tenure Lowe worked a variety of operational assignments, including patrol, school resource officer, Third Street Promenade bike patrol and multiple administrative assignments.
He was most recently captain of the field services division, police officials said.
Loew also has served as lead facilitator in "constitutional policing, procedural justice and implicit bias curriculum training" for the 500- member force.
A involved member of the community, Lowe represented the departent on numberous local non-profit boards, including Kiwanis, the Boys and Girls Club and the Police Activities League (PAL).
He recently launched SMPD's Juvenile Diversion Program, which "seeks alternative ways to engage and interact with youth who violate the law," police officials said.
Redmond, which is located 15 miles east of Seattle, had an estimated population of 67,678 in 2018, up from 54,144 counted in the 2010 U.S. Census.
In 1986, Microsoft moved its headquarters to Redmond, which is also home to Nintendo of America.
