Library Bookstore Sale Offers Antiquarian Finds
1900 Pico Boulevard
Santa Monica, CA 90405

October 23, 2019 -- Next month, bibliophiles -- and buyers for area bookstores -- will line up before the doors open for the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library Bookstore's big annual sale.
They'll rush in armed with boxes and bags in the hopes of snatching those rare volumes or disc the bookstore's volunteers have culled and priced during the year.
And this year's sale -- which takes place in the Main Library on Saturday, November 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. -- once again offers some rare finds.
There's a 1863 copy of the US Constitution, a 26-volume set of Robert Louis Stevenson’s works, a full set of Rudyard Kipling and a 30 volume set of the works of William Makepeace Thakeray.
There are also two sets of the Harvard classics -- a millennium edition in red leather in wraps and an alumni edition -- and a Niel Diamond Songbook signed by the artist.
The songbook is among the signed books about popular music, musicals and the music industry donated by the family of a music publisher.
"We are privileged to have received outstanding donations from the public enabling us to collect works that the Library cannot use in their main collection for the public," Friends officials said.
In the past, book donors have included architecture films and members of the film industry, said Alice Mitchell a Friends volunteer.
The Friend's volunteers price the materials based on copies listed on online book sites, she said.
Last year, nearly 100 patrons purchased material at the sale, which raised about $3,000, Mitchell said.
Proceeds from the sale support ongoing programming at all branches, including Santa Monica Reads, Summer Reading for Adults, Kids and Teens, SMPL at the Beach, Soundwaves New Music Series Concerts and El Día de Los Niños/El Día de Los Libros (Children’s Day/Book Day).
The Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard, is served by Big Blue Bus routes 1, 7, R7, R10 and 18 and provides bicycle parking racks.
