October 1, 2019 -- St. John's Health Center has received an anonymous $25 million donation that will "kick-start" a $150 million fundraising effort, the center's Foundation announced Tuesday.

The gift is one of the largest ever made to the Santa Monica medical center and will support the center, as well as the John Wayne Cancer Institute and the Pacific Neuroscience Institute.

The gift, said the Foundation's President/CEO Bob Klein, "will enable physicians and scientists to provide the personal and compassionate care St. John's is known for while funding innovation in clinical care.

"The return on this investment will impact generations to come," Klein said.

Named the "Power of Partnership Campaign," the foundation's fundraising effort is aimed at supporting clinical and research programs, purchasing equipment and hiring staff, officials said.

The donation is likely the third largest made to the hospital founded in 1942 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth.

In 2009, St. John's received a $100 million donation from billionaire biopharmaceutical executive Patrick Soon-Shiong and his wife Michele Chan to turn St. John’s Health Center into a cutting-edge medical hub.

Two years earlier, the couple donated $35 million to help pay for a massive, ongoing rebuilding effort to replace the half-century-old facility battered by the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.

At the time, the grant was the largest individual donation to Saint John’s and one of the largest given to a California community hospital ("Billionaire Gives Saint John’s $35 Million," January 18, 2007).

St. John's is embarking of Phase 2 of its development plan, which will add ten new buildings to the medical center's campus at 20th Street and Santa Monica Boulevard, according to the City's planning website.

Five buildings will be demolished to pave the way for the new buildings, according to the site.

The draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) was released July 30.

Famous donors to St. John's have included the late talk show host Johnny Carson and screen legend Jimmy Stewart.
