Teacher Who Penned Piece Comparing Trump Aide to Pig Pen Back in the Classroom
By Jorge Casuso
October 18, 2018 -- A Franklin Elementary school teacher who was reassigned after writing about her former third grade student, Trump aide Stephen Miller, is back in the classroom, School District officials said Thursday.
In a short statement District officials said Nikki Fiske "has returned to her classroom assignment."
"We have conducted a thoughtful review and we have addressed the matter with the teacher," said District spokeswomen Gail Pinsker.
"We are unable to provide any additional comments as this is a personnel issue."
Fiske was placed on home assignment after a piece ran last Wednesday in the Hollywood Reporter comparing an eight-year-old Miller to Pig Pen in the comic strip "Peanuts."
District officials, who seemed to be caught by surprise when the piece appeared, conducted a review to determine if Fiske had violated privacy laws or polices ("District to Determine if Franklin School Teacher Violated Trump Aide's Privacy Rights," October 12, 2018).
Fiske was replaced by a substitute teacher during the review.
The piece generated widespread media attention, with storis appearing in major media outlets across the country.
There also were plenty of opinions both defending and criticizing Fiske.
"According to the district," Ronda Schies of Oceanside wrote in a letter to the LA Times, "Fiske 'may not have complied with applicable laws and district policies' regarding the release of student information.
In an opinion piece that ran in the Washington Examiner, Becket Adams criticized Fiske.
"I’m glad this isn’t a thing we’re all going to just agree is OK and normal. Because there’s something fundamentally gross about a third-grade teacher saving up gossip about her students for later use.
"Thank God that the vast majority of us were spared the indignity of having a jerk like Fiske for a teacher," Adams wrote.
