Santa Monica Library Celebrates Comics Next Month | ||
By Lookout Staff April 18, 2017 -- Comics books have entertained generations for more than a century and kids are still turning their pages well into the digital age. Beginning May 1, the Santa Monica Library will launch a week-long celebration of comic books that culminates May 6 with Free Comic Book Day, which has been celebrated on the first Saturday in May by comic book stores and libraries since 2002.
On Free Comic Book Day, Saturday, adults, teens and kids can stop by any Library location from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to pick up a free comic book while supplies last. The Main Library also will host a day of comics-related activities that include "a recent blockbuster movie screening starring a ragtag band of intergalactic misfits," a superhero photo booth, drop-in crafts and other comics-related activities, library officials said. From 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., event co-sponsor Hi De Ho Comics will host a “cosplay” (costume play) contest as part of their all-day Free Comic Book Day celebration. For movie titles, addresses and other details, see smpl.org/comics or call 310-458-8600. All programs are free; seating is limited and on a first arrival basis. The Santa Monica Public Library is wheelchair accessible. For special disabled services, call Library Administration at (310) 458-8606 at least one week before the event. The Main Library is served by Big Blue Bus routes 1, 7, R7, R10 and 18 and |
