April 18, 2017 -- Comics books have entertained generations for more than a century and kids are still turning their pages well into the digital age.

Beginning May 1, the Santa Monica Library will launch a week-long celebration of comic books that culminates May 6 with Free Comic Book Day, which has been celebrated on the first Saturday in May by comic book stores and libraries since 2002.
Scine Comic Book For the week leading up to Free Comic Book Day, all four Santa Monica Public Library branch locations will offer more free programs that include comics-related movies, library officials said.

On Monday, May 1, from noon to 9:00 pm, the Fairview Branch offers a "drop-in, personalized comic bookmark craft program that all ages are welcome to enjoy," library officials said.

The celebration continues Tuesday, May 2, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, when the Pico Branch hosts Ka-Pow!, an all-ages party that includes crafts and a comic exhibit.

On Wednesday, May 3, at 6:30 pm, the Montana Avenue Branch screens "a satirical, coming-of-age comedy film based on a popular, adult graphic novel," followed on Thursday from 3:30 pm to 4:30 p.m. with a chance for kids ages 5-11 to make a "no-sew superhero cape" at the Ocean Park Branch, officials said.

On Free Comic Book Day, Saturday, adults, teens and kids can stop by any Library location from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to pick up a free comic book while supplies last.

The Main Library also will host a day of comics-related activities that include "a recent blockbuster movie screening starring a ragtag band of intergalactic misfits," a superhero photo booth, drop-in crafts and other comics-related activities, library officials said.

From 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., event co-sponsor Hi De Ho Comics will host a “cosplay” (costume play) contest as part of their all-day Free Comic Book Day celebration.

All programs are free; seating is limited and on a first arrival basis.

The Main Library is served by Big Blue Bus routes 1, 7, R7, R10 and 18 and
provides bicycle parking racks.
