August 5, 2014 – Santa Monica Public Library card holders can now access thousands of movies, television shows, music albums and audiobooks on smartphones and home computers, officials announced on Monday.

The new program was created through a partnership between the library and Hoopla Digital, an Ohio-based on-demand internet streaming service that caters to public libraries.

Card holders can download the free Hoopla digital mobile application on their Android and Apple devices from their respective app stores

Those who wish to stream on their own home computers can visit hoopladigital.com to access thousands of multimedia titles – from major Hollywood productions, record companies and publishers – available to borrow for instant streaming or temporary downloading to their smartphones, tablets, computers and Apple TV.

“We are thrilled to increase the Library’s online offerings,” said Maria Taesil Hudson Carpenter, director of library services. “By doing so, we are able to provide 24/7 access and a new way for our cardholders to engage with the library’s resources.”

Carpenter said customers only need a library card, which is free for Santa Monica residents, to stream or download content. All the content is free.

“There is no waiting period for popular titles and Hoopla’s automatic return means no late fees,” she added.

All content is accessible via hoopla digital’s mobile app and online at www.hoopladigital.com.
