November 1, 2013 -- A Santa Monica couple will receive the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) Humanitarian Award at the organization’s Centennial Gala Celebration next month, ADL officials announced this week.
Recipients Barbara and Thomas J. Leanse have been staunch supporters of the League for three decades, devoted “much of their time to the community” and held leadership positions within the organization, officials said.
Tom Leanse is the senior executive vice president, chief legal officer and secretary of the Santa Monica-based Macerich Company, one of the nation’s largest owners of regional and community shopping centers, including Santa Monica Place.
He has served on ADL’s executive committee for more than two decades and created its Maxwell E. Greenberg Summer Associate Research Program.
Barbara Leanse has been affiliated with Cedars Sinai since 1985. She began as a social worker and has been director of the Volunteer Services Department since 1998. Both have served as past ADL Gala chairs.
George David Kieffer, a partner in the national law firm of Manatt Phelps & Phillips LLP, will be the recipient of the ADL’s Jurisprudence Award. A supporter of numerous charities, including ADL, Kieffer is a member of the Board of Regents of the University of California and was a principal co-author of the new Los Angeles City Charter.
The three recipients “will be honored for excellence in their professional fields, leadership in our community and their philanthropic endeavors,” ADL officials said.
ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman will present the Humanitarian Award and Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean and Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law at UCI School of Law, will present the Jurisprudence Award.
Considered the nation's premier civil rights/human relations agency, ADL was established in 1913 "to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all."
ADL “fights anti-Semitism and bigotry of all kinds through educational programs, coalitions with community leaders, and partnerships with local law enforcement,” according to the organization’s website.
This year’s Gala will culminate ADL’s year-long Centennial celebration, which had the theme Imagine a World Without Hate®.
The Anti-Defamation League’s Pacific Southwest Region’s 2013 Centennial Gala will be held Tuesday, December 10 at 6 p.m. at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Tickets are $500.
