March 21, 2013 -- The Pacific Wheel on the Santa Monica Pier has been dubbed one of the “world's coolest” Ferris wheels in the March issue of Travel + Leisure Magazine.

Along with Pacific Park's Pacific Wheel, the list includes some of the most iconic Ferris wheels from around the world, including the London Eye and the Wonder Wheel at Coney Island.

“This is a terrific honor for the Pacific Wheel Ferris wheel, which is a celebrity in its own right,” said Jeff Klocke, vice president of Marketing and Administration at Pacific Park.

He said that the 85-foot wide Ferris wheel has been featured in more than 250 movies, television shows, commercials, music videos and print ads.

“Introducing the only entirely solar-powered Ferris wheel in the world,” reads the Travel + Leisure entry about the Pacific Wheel. “The original was sold on eBay in 2008 and replaced with an identical wheel sporting the same solar-powered design and waterfront location.”

The magazine also pointed out that the Ferris wheel has 160,000 energy-efficient LED lights, making for a “fantastic” evening light show.

The Pacific Wheel is featured alongside other Ferris wheels that put a “high-tech spin” on the concept, according to the Travel + Leisure article, like Tokyo's Big O wheel which operates without a center axle and the Singapore Flyer, currently the world's tallest.
