Suspects in Custody after High-Speed Chase through Santa Monica
By Lookout Staff
January 18, 2013 -- Police arrested two suspects Wedneday after a high-speed chase through Santa Monica and neighboring Venice. Police chased the two men after they fled the Vons parking on Wilshire Boulevard.
Between 2 and 2:15 p.m., officers investigated a call about a woman suspected of theft who had been detained by a security guard at the store.
As police responded, two men pulled into the Vons parking lot in “an older Honda,” Santa Monica Police Sergeant Richard Lewis said.
One of the men in the car got out and exchanged words with a Vons employee, Lewis said. Then, he allegedly pulled a gun on the employee.
“The two men fled in the vehicle,” Lewis said, adding that it was not clear if the the alleged theft and the incident in the parking lot were related.
While the men fled, Lewis said, they threw several items out of the car, including a handgun, which police recovered.
Shortly after the suspects drove out of Santa Monica and into Venice, they hit a parked van. Lewis said the van was empty and no one was injured.
Near the Venice Boardwalk, one of the suspects jumped out of the car and continued on foot while the driver drove on through parts of Los Angeles and Santa Monica.
Less than two hours after police received the call about the suspect theft, the chase ended.
The driver came to a stop and got out of the car where 25th Street becomes a dead-end, just north of the Santa Monica Airport, Lewis said.
Police arrested the second suspect in the Venice Beach area just before 5:30 p.m., officials said.
