January 17, 2013 -- City officials want residents to get ready for Active Santa Monica Week, a citywide initiative that runs from January 20 to January 28 meant to encourage fitness and healthy living.

During Active Santa Monica Week, the Memorial Park Fitness Room and the Santa Monica Swim Center will offer free workouts and classes.

“At Memorial Park, you can work out for free in the Fitness Room, using LifeFitness strength training machines, hand weights and cardio machines,” staff said, adding that no membership is required.

Though access to the fitness room is free during Active Santa Monica Week, entry is usually $3 a visit for residents and $4 for non-residents. Four-week passes are also available for $24 for residents and $32 for non-residents.

The Santa Monica Swim Center will offer free classes during Active Santa Monica Week.

The classes offered are Shallow Wet Water Workout on Sundays at 8:15 a.m. and Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

On Sundays at 9:30 a.m. or Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m., the Swim Center offers a “Deep Wet Water Workout.” At 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, there is an adult fitness swim.

“The low-impact Wet Workouts integrate aerobic exercise with strength-training,” staff said. “All skill levels are welcome in either class, however Deep Water Workout participants must be able to swim 1 pool length.”

“The Adult Fitness Swim is for those who would like to improve their technique and form, as well as develop endurance and physical fitness with the help of an expert coach,” staff said.

Classes usually cost $5 for residents and $10 for non-residents, though 10-class passes are available for $44 for residents and $88 for non-residents.
