January 2, 2013 -- Bluegrass fans will get a treat on January 12 when the Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Duo perform for the crowd in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium at Santa Monica's Main Library. The concert, which starts at 3:00 p.m., is presented by the Santa Monica Public Library and the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest. “Susie Glaze has been hailed by Bluegrass Unlimited magazine as 'an important voice on the California bluegrass scene' and is considered by many to be a leading light in the 'newgrass' movement,” library officials said. Glaze is also winner of the Just Plain Folks 2006 Music Award for Best Roots Album for “Blue Eyed Darlin.” That same album was Folkworks Magazine's pick for Best Bluegrass Album of 2005. Glaze's debuted as a solo singer in 2002 with her album “Home on the Hill,” which features her rendition of the popular Appalachian folk tune “Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies” as well as versions of Gillian Welch's “Wichita” and “Paper Wings.” Though Glaze will be singing lead vocals, she is also a guitarist and plays the autoharp and the mountain dulcimer, a small, fretted string instrument found primarily in Appalachia. After the concert, guests can pick up a CD and get it signed by Glaze. The concert is free and open to all ages, but seating is limited and is on a first arrival basis, library officials said.
