February 25, 2013 -- Women’s contributions to science, technology, engineering and math will be the theme of Women's History Month in Santa Monica in March. Sponsored by the Santa Monica Commission on the Status of Women (COSW), the celebration includes a month of events throughout the city “designed to support and promote women’s achievements, courage and creativity,” the commission said. The celebration kicks off Tuesday, February 26, with an opening reception at 6 p.m. in the foyer of Santa Monica City Hall, immediately to be followed by a proclamation by the City Council and Mayor Pam O’Connor officially declaring March as Women's History Month. Also on Tuesday, a photography exhibit of Santa Monica women throughout history will be launched in the City Hall Foyer. The public is welcome to attend. "We are honored to collaborate with our Santa Monica area partners working to promote a rich history of women and girls in our community,” said Sylvia Ghazarian, vice chair of the commission. “Their exemplary pioneering work, scientific breakthroughs, invention of new technology, and creation of business opportunities in STEM will be recognized throughout the month," she said. For more information on the schedule of events, visit COSW’s website at www.smgov.net/cosw.
