October 22, 2012 - - Santa Monica College will offer up a lecture on obesity in America and a dance series by the Synapse Dance Theater in early November.
Dr. Julie Guthman, social science professor at UC Santa Cruz, will give a free lecture November 1 on America's weight issues.
The lecture, which will be in Humanities & Social Science Lecture Hall 165 on the main SMC campus at 11:15 a.m., is called “Weighing In: Obesity, Food Justice and the Limits of Capitalism,” also the title of Guthman's new book.
“She challenges many widely accepted assumptions about the obesity epidemic, including whether it can be addressed by exposing people to the 'right' food,” officials said about Guthman, whose work revolves around “the politics of food and agriculture and how they affect food production, distribution and consumption.”
Later in the week, SMC's contemporary dance ensemble -- Synapse Dance Theater - - will present a “a program of new repertory by professional guest artists, award-winning faculty artists and up-and-coming student choreographers,” according to college officials.
“The concert features Modern Dance, Contemporary, Hip-Hop, Lyrical Jazz, Contemporary Jazz Modern Ballet and more,” official said.
The first performance is at 4 p.m. on November 3, followed by a 7:30 p.m. show. On November 4, there will be one show at 7:30 p.m.
“Synapse has earned a reputation for artistic excellence and innovation since it was founded 36 years ago, college officials said. “The student troupe has performed throughout the nation, including the Electric Lodge in Venice; the Cast Theater in Hollywood; the Getty Center in Los Angeles; and American College Dance festivals in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, California and New Jersey.”
