November 13, 2012 -- Last week, Santa Monica Red Cross officials annouced that Julie Thomas would take over as Chief Executive Officer for the organization.

Thomas, who will oversee the fundraising efforts and operations at the Santa Monica Red Cross, left her position as the executive director for the Inland Empire Division of the American Heart Association in Riverside.

"I'm thrilled to be in Santa Monica,” Thomas said. “This is the place I want to work because the members of the chapter's Board of Directors are so committed to excellence and where the community support of the Red Cross is so positive."

“I'm thrilled to have her aboard. She's a very nice lady and she has a huge amount of experience in fundraising,” said Director of Communications for the Santa Monica Red Cross Bill Bauer.

Before her job in Riverside, Thomas worked with the American Heart Association in Burlingame, California, “where she was responsible for managing the day-to day operation of youth market activities for the entire Western States Affiliate,” according to Red Cross officials.

She had been with the American Heart Association since 2006, but began her career in 1978 when she joined the Multiple Sclerosis Society, according to officials.

She eventually became CEO of the Northern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Oakland, California, “where she managed and supervised all chapter activities including development, financial management and client services,” officials said.

“She knows how to work with volunteers,” said Bauer. “And she's nice, easy-going and friendly.”

Thomas was hired to replace Wendy Jacobs who left her position at the Santa Monica Red Cross to become director of development at the Painted Turtle in Downtown Santa Monica.

The Painted Turtle is an organization that focuses on giving children with serious medical conditions an opportunity to have a camp experience.

Thomas is based at the Santa Monica Red Cross chapter at 1450 11th Street in Santa Monica. Her phone number is 310-394-3773 and her email address is julie.thomas@redcross.org.
