February 10, 2012 -- Valentine’s Day is typically a bonanza for florists, chocolate shops and the champagne aisle of your local liquor store. But when all is said and done, one of the most romantic spots in Los Angeles is located at the end of the Santa Monica Pier, according to Westways magazine and AOL Digital Los Angeles.

Pacific Park’s Ferris Wheel, with 360-degree views of LA, the Santa Monica Mountains and coastline, Catalina Island, Malibu and the Palos Verdes Peninsula, will be open for rides till 9 p.m. Valentine’s evening and will feature a special Valentine’s Day lighting display from sunset till midnight.

The Ferris Wheel pauses more than 130 feet high at the top of the ride and, with the panoramic view of lights rimming the bay, known locally as “the Queen’s Necklace,” you’d be hard pressed to find a better spot for declarations of love.

You will also be doing so with a nod to environmental responsibility – the 160,000 lights illuminating the Ferris Wheel are all LED.

And if you are unable to make it to the Pier in the evening, you can watch the light show activity on their webcam at http://pacpark.com/webcam.php?location=webcam.

Although Pacific Park Director of Marketing and Sales Jeff Klocke said they don’t keep official records of engagements decided upon the Pacific Wheel, at least one proposal was made, filmed, tweeted, Vimeo’d and YouTube’d around the world.

“Spencer Pratt proposed to Heidi Montag on the Ferris Wheel a couple of years ago,” Klocke said. “We feel sure that he thought long and hard about where the most romantic site to pop the question would be.”

“The Hills” stars’ example as romantic ideal aside, the Pier might offer one of the biggest bangs for your buck on the day of love. Entrance to Pacific Park is free and the Pacific Wheel is only $5.00. The lifetime memories, though, is priceless.
