September 9, 2011 -- Oscar-winning Actress Reese Witherspoon was hit by a car while jogging along Georgina Avenue Wednesday morning.

The accident, which happened at the intersection of 20th Street and Georgina Avenue, occurred around 11 a.m.

Witherspoon was taken by an ambulance to a nearby hospital where she was treated for minor injuries, including a small gash on her forehead, Santa Monica Police Sergeant Richard Lewis said.

News sources said that she didn't spend much time in the hospital. She was released later that the same day to recuperate in her own Brentwood area home where she lives with her husband and two children.

The accident happened when an 84 year-old female Santa Monica resident, driving south on 20th Street, failed to stop for the actress.

Us Weekly reported that a witness to the accident said that it seemed that a tree had obstructed the driver's view.

Witherspoon was crossing within an unmarked crosswalk at 20th Street when she was struck by the car, Lewis said.

The driver was cited by the police for not yielding, but she was not taken into custody.

According to ABC News, Witherspoon is an avid exerciser, running about three miles a day. She also spends a lot of time practicing yoga.
