| Santa Monica Public Library Gets Top Rating | |
|
By Lookout Staff November 11, 2011 -- For the second year in a row, the Santa Monica Public Library was the only Southern California library to earn a prestigious five-star rating from the Library Journal, City officials announced Thursday. The local library was ranked among the top 262 of the nation's 7,513 public libraries rated on the level of service they provided. The libraries were evaluated on per capita statistics that included visits, circulation, program attendance, and public Internet computer use. The Library Journal Index 2010 gives five, four, or three stars to the top libraries rated. The ratings, announced this month, are based on 2009 data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). "The LJ Index offers an overall indication of how a library's performance stacks up to peer libraries and provides guidance on how public libraries can better inform their stakeholders of achievements, service opportunities, and improve library awareness and funding," City officials said. The recession had a marked effect during this measurement period, with both per capita visits and per capita circulation showing increases nationwide, according to the Library Journal. The Santa Monica Public Library offers a variety of services and programs for all ages and interests at four neighborhood library locations.
